A Better Way to Be Loud (next post 4/4)

How many of us have taken our children to a pro or college sporting event and cringed at the behavior or language of "fans"?  Whether it's a single loudmouth in your section or an entire arena chanting a compound word because of an official's call, there have been times when I've wanted to to put earmuffs on the kids.
It's ugly, and I've never had a great feel for what to do about it.  What can be done about spectators who are determined to yell at opponents or officials?

Up until last week I had no idea, but it turns out there is a way for fans to be rowdy and vocal without sacrificing a family-friendly environment.
A group of guys who regularly attend MLS games in Kansas City have begun getting attention for the comments they shout at players and officials.

Fed up with all the anger, venom and obscenities, these men set out to create a place where the yelling was peppered with positivity and comedy.  They might holler at an official and offer to buy him ice cream when he makes a favorable call for the home team.  They might call out to an opposing player and tell him that they really like his shoes.  Simple stuff like that.  Of course, some of the comments are funnier than others, but regardless, everybody is having a really good time.  The rest of the people in their section have bought in, and these guys have created a completely different culture for everybody.

I'm probably not doing this story justice -- at some point I need to get to a game and see all this firsthand.  But as this was all being described to me, I couldn't help but think of the potential impact these guys were having.  It certainly isn't complicated.  It didn't take much to get something like this started, but it's already making a difference in the experience being had by families at the stadium.  If it can happen at Sporting Park in Kansas City, why not everywhere?
